Steward Island (18.3)

It was a very early departure from Queenstown, especially when considering the night before was St. Patricks Day. But still, I managed to get up on time and made it on the Bus. We were rewarded with a spectacular sunrise over Lake Wakatipu.

After about 2 ½ h driving, we arrived at Bluff and about have the people from our bus went on the ferry to steward Islands. It was about one hour over a quite rough see (even thou the crew sad it was not).
Once there I booked a trip to Ulva Island with some Sightseeing on the way and a guided Walk through the Native forests on this little Island. Ulva Island is Natural Habitat for indigenous plant and wildlife: in 1997 it was declared Rat free, so the birds and plants don’t have to worry about them. So there are about 12 rare birds on this Island, some of whom have once been declared as extinct…

Bell Bird
Robin, once beleved extinct
Fern, only one cell thick.
After that, I did some walking around and found some nice places.

In the evening I wanted to go Kiwi watching, but because of malfunctioning alarm clocks (not mine), we had to cancel it ;-)
